Platini defends payment to him for FIFA work

UEFA president Michel Platini Friday said a payment tohim of 2 million Swiss francs (2.04 million dollars) beinginvestigated by Swiss authorities was made for work he carried outfor FIFA under contract.
A criminal investigation into FIFA president Joseph Blatter includesan alleged "disloyal payment" to the president of European football'sgoverning body.
Platini "was heard as a person asked to provide information," theSwiss attorney general's office said.
Platini said: "Regarding the payment that was made to me, I wish tostate that this amount relates to work which I carried out under acontract with FIFA and I was pleased to have been able to clarify allmatters relating to this with the authorities."
The former France international was being seen as the favourite tosucceed Blatter, who steps down at an extraordinary FIFA congress inZurich on February 26.
"Today I was asked by the Swiss authorities to provide informationrelating to the ongoing investigations surrounding FIFA," Platinisaid.
"I have always been open to supporting the relevant bodies andauthorities in their investigative work and therefore cooperatedfully."
He added: "Today I also made clear to the Swiss authorities thatsince I live in Switzerland I am available to speak with them anytime to clarify any matters relating to the investigations."
The Swiss attorney general's office said in its statement FridayBlatter was suspected of the payment to Platini "allegedly made forwork performed between January 1999 and June 2002." The payment "wasexecuted in February 2011."
